What we know:

According to the Ross site our beloved 1996 Golf Harlequins are one of the most limited production cars Volkswagen has ever produced.  There are presumed to be 264 MK3 Golf harlequins made for the North American market.

The origin of the multicolored concept dates back to an ad from 1964 showing a Volkswagen Beetle wearing different color panels.

Much later in 1995 Volkswagen Europe decided to make a limited edition run of 20 MK3 Polo to show the new models available colors. The colors chosen were Tornado Red, Chagall Blue, Ginster Yellow and Pistachio Green. Surprisingly the car was so well received VW decided to make another 1000 models available for sale. After that run sold out they decided to produce another 1800 bringing the grand total to 2820 units sold.

At the same time in late 1995 Volkswagen North America decided to produce a limited number of MK3 Golf Harlequins for the 1996 auto show circuit. Due to a positive customer reaction VW allegedly produced 60 more. After those sold they did a final run of 200. It is believed a few of the cars were provided by Volkswagen for transportation during the 1996 Olympic games. After the games were over Jim Ellis Volkswagen in Atlanta, GA was given the task to sell them off. Jim Ellis had a total of 39 Harlequins, 25 for his dealer in Chamblee, GA and 14 for Marietta, GA.

Jim Ellis is believed to of had the most harlequins at one time. Rumor has it as the novelty wore off, this dealer swapped panels back to create single colored cars. Evidence has shown itself over the years with several solid cars being found. All of these cars fall within the VIN range and include the correct interiors.
So far solid color car totals are: 3 pistachio green, 1 tornado red, 2 chagall blue, 2 ginster yellow.

I personally own 113331, #13 of the 200 run. This was an original Jim Ellis car. After getting the car home I pulled all of the door panels to have a look for myself. Everything is pistachio on this car inside and out. Looking even further I found a single ginster yellow fender bolt (behind the inner plastic) and a single chagall blue bolt on the rear hatch hinge.
