Comments: Jose lives in Toluca City, Mexico, and purchased this Harlequin brand new from a VW Agency in Lerma, Mexico.  From everything I've gathered, this may have been one of the first four Harlequins ever produced, which was probably used to demonstrate the model to VW Executives, and left in Mexico.  It does not have the silver gauge faces as later Harlequins do.

Comments: Emily purchased this Harlequin in 1998 with 16K Miles on it.  She submitted this Harlequin on 8/8/2006 and it has an earlier production VIN than any Harlequin previously submitted, and may be one of the first four ever produced. Update 3/2013: This was a free car that Matthew just got from a friend in San Francisco. It has a few dings, needs a CV joint, and needs a rear hatch latch replaced, but runs well. I plan to find parts to get it as straight as possible.

Comments: Ross heard the rumor that many Harlequins sat around and were then painted a single color, or that some left the factory just one color and have finally found evidence that this is true.  He found this Harlequin while searching for 1996 Golfs on the internet (1/14/04).  The VIN fits in the Harlequin range, and Golfs were never available in the USA completely painted in Pistachio green.   

Update: “I bought this car New Years day 2016 sight unseen. An old MK3 friend posted a CL listing that was local to him in NC. It was advertised for $500 as a parts car with a bad transmission. I quickly sent him some money to secure it and 2 weeks later I was loaded up with a trailer heading south to bring it home. It was originally sold by Jim Ellis in Atlanta, GA. I pulled all 4 door panels and the rear hatch tub. Unlike the first car of the 200 run this car is Pistachio green inside and out. I did find a yellow fender bolt and a blue bolt on the hinge for the hatch. I believe that this is one of the cars that Jim Ellis swapped back to a solid color in order to move them off of the lot. Number 13 is currently being swapped to a manual transmission. It’s garage kept but at the rate I’m working it may never see the road again.”

Comments:  This is another solid harlequin that came from Jim Ellis Atlanta. The story I heard on this car is it was purchased by German nationals who where in Atlanta working the Olympics. When they left back from Europe they shipped the car back with them. It was purchased by a Dutchman then sold to someone in France where it’s being restored back to it’s multi colored self. . I believe this is the second Harlequin to be imported to Europe.

Update 8/2011: "Lenny Salasky, the owner of L&T Auto, a VW and Audi Salvage Yard in Allentown, PA has resurrected this Harlequin.  It now has a turbo-charged VR6  running 14 lbs. of boost with approximately 400 hp.  It has a leather interior and a late model Cabrio dash.  Lenny has been in the VW and Audi salvage business for over 20 years.  His son, Warren inspired him to take on this project, and Lenny admits that this is his favorite VW.  It has been affectionately dubbed (pun intended) "The Harley"."

Comments: Owned since new, over 250K Miles.  “We had seen a VW Harlequin vacationing in Toronto and immediately fell in love with it. The car boasts body panels in four colors - Tornado Red, Ginster Yellow, Pistachio Green and Chagall Blue - and black interior fabric with multi-colored panels that mirror the outside of the vehicle. Fewer than 300 of them were made in 1996, the only year it was offered. However, when we told the Volkswagen salesman we wanted "one of those multi-colored cars," he laughed so hard he had to sit down. He then told us that the only fool who still had any of those was a dealer in Atlanta. After that we called the Atlanta dealer every month until he finally came down to $11,000, including shipping and a CD player. We mailed him a check, and three weeks later our car arrived.”

Comments: Paint is all original, and the car has only 133000 kms (as of March, 2005.  It was for sale at $7,995 CAD.  I just wanted to take the time to let you know that I am now the Proud owner of #157 Harlequin.  I purchased it from Lisa Weeks back in October of 2010 and drove it for a bit before parking it in the garage for most of the winter, I had come across it simply by chance when I was driving back from work late one night in niagara falls, i pulled over to check it out as I had never seen a Harlequin in person before, saw what good shape it was in and contacted Lisa the next day to start the process of buying it.  It was automatic when I bought it with 180,000km on the clock, unfortunately the transmission died on me back in April, so after weighing all my options I came across a friend of mine selling his Jetta 12V VR6 5 speed. 

Update (3/2020): James reached out and gave us a little more history on the car “I bought it in 2017 from Mike Wells in Oshawa, Ontario. Canada. It now resides in Pickering, Ontario. Canada in pieces. It was crashed in 2019 and will be rebuilt at some point but for the moment it is still a live VIN.”
